Lerone Murphy Falls Short Against Movsar Evloev At UFC London

Controversial decision leaves Murphy's title aspirations hanging by a thread after a hard-fought battle.

Category: Sports

At UFC London, Manchester fighter Lerone Murphy saw his title aspirations dashed when he was edged out by Movsar Evloev, resulting  from a controversial majority decision that left many fans and analysts scratching their heads. The judges scored the bout 48-46, 48-46, and 47-47, awarding Evloev the victory, even after he had a point deducted for a second low blow inflicted on Murphy during the championship rounds.

This fight was perceived by many within the mixed martial arts community to be an eliminator for the featherweight championship, potentially setting up a showdown with current champion Alexander Volkanovski. With this loss, Murphy’s record now stands at 17-1-1, marking the first blemish on his previously undefeated slate.

Murphy, 34, took some time to find his rhythm but began to assert himself after a close first round. His movement and sharp strikes effectively stifled Evloev’s takedown attempts, making it difficult for the 32-year-old Russian to execute his game plan. Evloev, known for his grappling prowess, only managed to take Murphy down once, during the third round, but Murphy showcased impressive defensive skills by quickly returning to his feet.

Things took a dramatic turn when Evloev was deducted a point for a second low blow, leaving Murphy visibly affected and crawling on the canvas. This incident appeared to significantly diminish Evloev’s chances of winning without a finish, yet he responded by dominating the final two rounds, forcing the judges' decision to swing his way.

Murphy, displaying commendable sportsmanship, acknowledged Evloev’s performance after the fight, stating, “Make sure Movsar gets the title shot, he deserves it.” His graciousness stood out against the backdrop of a match filled with tension and controversy.

Meanwhile, the co-main event featured Paddy Pimblett’s teammate, Luke Riley, who improved to 2-0 within the UFC by sweeping the scorecards against Michael  “Aswell Jr. This win was a much-needed morale boost for the Liverpudlians after Kurtis Campbell suffered a knockout loss to Danny Silva earlier on the main card.

Riley’s victory came after a bout that had fans buzzing with anticipation, particularly following the disappointment of Michael “Venom” Page’s lackluster performance against Sam Patterson. Page, who emerged victorious, nonetheless faced widespread criticism for what many deemed one of the worst fights of recent memory. The fight was characterized by minimal action, leaving spectators frustrated and disappointed.

The criticism of Page’s fighting style has been a recurring theme since his transition from Bellator MMA, where he earned a reputation for his unorthodox and engaging approach. Now, at 38 years old and with a UFC record of 4-1, questions arise about his future within the organization, particularly after his recent comments about fighter pay and matchmaking.

Some analysts suggest that Page might be best served by exploring opportunities outside the UFC, especially considering the potential for lucrative matchups with promotions like Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions. The allure of higher paydays and the chance to reclaim his status could be enticing for Page, especially if the UFC continues to mismanage his fights.

Back at UFC London, the preliminary card also provided some exciting moments, including a stunning debut by London-bred Shanelle Dyer, who knocked out Ravena Oliveira with a spectacular head kick. Dyer’s performance electrified the crowd and set a thrilling tone for the event.

Another standout was rising heavyweight Mario Pinto, who maintained his undefeated record with a hard-fought decision victory over Felipe Franco. Pinto, of Portuguese descent but raised primarily  within the English capital, showcased his skills and determination, leaving fans eager to see what’s next for him.

On the flip side, not all home fighters fared well. Louie Sutherland and Shem Rock both struggled, with Sutherland suffering an early finish against Brando Pericic and Rock being decisively beaten by Abdul-Kareem Al-Selwady. Rock’s post-fight antics, which included instigating a scuffle after the final bell, added an unexpected twist to his night, potentially jeopardizing his future within the organization.

Al-Selwady, who managed to keep his composure during the chaos, remarked, “I don’t really think there’s too much to say about it; I only talk  inside the cage with my performance.” His focus on the fight rather than the theatrics outside the cage highlighted a stark difference between him and Rock.

UFC London proved to be a mixed bag for the British fighters, with some shining brightly and others struggling to find their footing. The event showcased the talent within the UFC and raised questions about matchmaking and the future of certain fighters, particularly those like Page, who are at a crossroads.

With the featherweight division heating up and title shots on the line, the stakes couldn't be higher. Murphy’s defeat serves to highlight the unpredictability of the sport and the challenges fighters face when aspirations meet reality. What remains to be seen is how Murphy will bounce back from this setback and whether Evloev will get his well-deserved title shot against Volkanovski.

For now, the MMA community watches closely, eager to see how these fighters navigate their careers post-UFC London. Will Murphy reclaim his path to the title? Can Page find success elsewhere? Only time will tell.
