The Hurricanes advance to face Purdue after a strong second-half performance against the Tigers

The Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball team kicked off their 2026 NCAA Tournament campaign with an impressive 80-66 victory over the Missouri Tigers on Friday night. The seventh-seeded Hurricanes showcased resilience and skill, particularly during a dominant second half, to secure their spot against the second-seeded Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday.
Malik Reneau led the charge for Miami, scoring 24 points, with a staggering 19 of those coming after halftime. His performance was complemented by Tre Donaldson, who added 17 points, and Shelton Henderson, who chipped in with 15. This victory marks a notable turnaround for Miami, which struggled last season with a 7-24 record. Under the guidance of first-year head coach Jai Lucas, the Hurricanes finished the season at 26-8, tying a Division I record for a remarkable plus-19 win turnaround.
"What I'm most proud of is we talked about the glass and our identity showing, 46 rebounds, 16 offensive rebounds, 19 second-chance points, getting to the line 29 times, and then we took care of the ball," Coach Lucas said postgame. "That’s why we were able to generate the separation we did. It was a team effort. I'm just really proud of them." Miami's rebounding prowess was evident, with the team securing 46 boards compared to Missouri's 27, which allowed them to dominate the second-chance points category.
The game started with Miami establishing an early lead, going up by 10 points at one stage. They entered halftime with a narrow 27-26 advantage, but the second half proved to be a different story. The Hurricanes faced multiple lead changes early on, but a decisive 11-0 run, spearheaded by Reneau and Henderson, allowed Miami to pull away. "We’ve been emphasizing offensive rebounding since we got here; that’s all we’ve been doing, just every day, we offensive rebound," Reneau noted. "We do box-out drills, rebounding drills. So it’s just drilled into us to keep pushing the rebounds on both sides of the end."
Missouri, the tenth seed, struggled to maintain momentum, finishing their season with a 20-13 record, having lost four consecutive games. They were led by Jayden Stone, who scored 21 points, and Mark Mitchell, who contributed 19 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Miami’s strong performance. The Tigers shot 35.1% from the field and managed only two second-chance points, a stark comparison to Miami's efficiency.
After a brief surge from Missouri that saw them take a 51-49 lead midway through the second half, Miami responded with a flurry of scoring. The Hurricanes regained control and extended their lead to 63-54 following a two-handed dunk by Henderson. Donaldson’s timely three-pointer pushed the advantage to 68-60, effectively sealing the game for Miami.
"Coach's biggest thing is just treat it like a normal road game. Don’t try to overcomplicate it, do nothing different," Donaldson explained. "We’ve won some of these, and that’s what we got to go do tonight. I felt like we did a good job of staying poised, staying together, and handling it well." Miami’s ability to maintain composure, especially against a hostile crowd that heavily favored Missouri, was a key factor to their success.
Now, with their sights set on Purdue, Miami faces a formidable opponent. The Boilermakers, who defeated Queens 104-71, are known for their offensive efficiency and depth. Purdue’s Braden Smith, who scored 26 points and dished out eight assists against Queens, will be a player to watch. The all-time series leans slightly toward Purdue, who holds a 3-1 advantage over Miami. The last time these two teams met, Miami pulled off a thrilling comeback, overcoming a 20-point halftime deficit to win 58-54 during the 2020 ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Miami's defense will need to step up to contain Purdue's offensive threats. Coach Lucas acknowledged the importance of adjustments, especially considering the challenges posed by Purdue's scoring ability. "They’re a great team, and we’ve got to go out there and be a great defensive team to beat this team," Reneau emphasized, highlighting the need for a strong defensive performance.
This matchup is particularly exciting for Miami fans, who are eager to see how their team performs after a successful run to the Final Four last year. With three players earning All-ACC honors—Reneau (First Team), Donaldson (Second Team), and Ernest Udeh Jr. (Defensive Team)—the Hurricanes are well-equipped to make a deep tournament run.
Miami's performance against Missouri showcased their growth and reignited hopes for another memorable NCAA Tournament run. The Hurricanes will look to build on their momentum and continue to defy expectations against Purdue on Sunday at 12:10 p.m. ET, a game that will be broadcast on CBS. Fans are hopeful that Miami can replicate their previous success and perhaps even advance to the Sweet 16.
With the stakes higher than ever, the Hurricanes are ready to face the challenge head-on. The question now is whether they can maintain their intensity and capitalize on their strengths against a tough Purdue team. The upcoming game promises to be a thrilling encounter, and fans across the nation will be watching closely to see if Miami can continue their impressive tournament run.
