Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Chicago Area as Storms Approach

Multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms could bring damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rain overnight and into Tuesday.

The Chicago area is bracing for a turbulent weather pattern as a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued, warning residents of potential severe storms in the coming hours. This alert affects several counties, including DeKalb, LaSalle, Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will, and is in place until 3 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, the first chance of severe weather is expected to develop overnight, persisting into Tuesday morning. Regions along the Illinois-Wisconsin border, particularly McHenry, Lake, DeKalb, Kane, and Cook counties, face a 'slight' risk of severe storms, which is the second of five levels of storm risk as classified by the Storm Prediction Center. Meanwhile, areas including LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, and Will counties are under a 'marginal' risk.

The primary threats associated with these storms include gusty, damaging winds and large hail, with some meteorologists cautioning that a tornado cannot be completely ruled out. As the storms push southward, scattered showers and additional storms are anticipated during the Tuesday morning commute, raising concerns for drivers.

In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, similar weather patterns are also taking shape, with a severe thunderstorm watch in effect for a large portion of the area until 3:00 a.m. Monday. KCRG reported that this is a First Alert Day, indicating heightened awareness for severe storms capable of producing large hail and damaging winds. The biggest threat tonight is large hail, with the possibility of hailstones reaching up to two inches in diameter. Such hail can cause considerable damage to vehicles, roofs, and siding.

As the storms continue to develop, the National Weather Service has reported that scattered storms could extend into early Tuesday morning, with a low tornado threat and potential for flooding. Residents are advised to seek shelter indoors if a storm approaches their area. In the event of a tornado warning, it’s recommended to get to the lowest floor of your home, away from windows, and cover your head and neck with pillows or blankets.

In Chicago, the severe thunderstorm watch is compounded by the fact that several rounds of strong storms began hitting the area after 10 p.m. Monday. ABC7 Chicago noted that parts of Cook and Lake counties are currently under a severe thunderstorm warning until midnight Tuesday. The storms are expected to intensify, particularly north of the city, where the risk of severe weather is highest.

Looking ahead, the weather is expected to shift dramatically as temperatures reached a record-breaking 80 degrees on Monday, surpassing the previous record of 79 degrees set in 1998. This warm spell, the warmest day of the year so far, will be short-lived, as a cold front is set to push through, dropping temperatures significantly. By Wednesday, temperatures are expected to plummet to around 30 degrees cooler than Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the weather forecast predicts highs only in the 40s, with the potential for another round of strong storms developing after a warm and humid day. The main threat area will shift south and east, affecting regions such as Kankakee County in Illinois and northern Indiana, which will also be under a 'slight' risk of severe storms.

As the week progresses, the NBC 5 Storm Team forecasts that temperatures will rebound into the 60s by Thursday, coinciding with the Chicago White Sox home opener at Rate Field. Unfortunately, the Sox and Blue Jays may have to contend with rain, as another chance of showers is anticipated on Thursday.

The weather outlook for the rest of the week indicates that after Tuesday, the area could see several days of rain, with the potential for heavy rainfall totals by the end of the week. Forecasters are predicting that rainfall could accumulate to several inches, depending on the outcome of each storm system.

Weather experts are keeping a close eye on the forecast, especially for the potential of a wintry mix developing in the north on Wednesday night into Thursday. This development, though uncertain, could pose travel hazards for some areas. Residents are encouraged to stay updated through reliable weather sources, including local news stations and weather apps.

As the storms approach, it’s prudent for residents to prepare for changing weather conditions. Having multiple ways to receive alerts, such as NOAA Weather Radios or weather apps, is highly recommended. As conditions evolve, the community should stay informed and take necessary precautions to remain safe during this unsettled weather period.

In the meantime, as the severe thunderstorm watch continues, officials urge residents to remain vigilant and heed all weather advisories. With the unpredictable nature of spring storms, being prepared can make all the difference in ensuring safety.
